Transcript: Acidizing Wells Without Acid Burns
Hello folks, this is Glenn McColpin with SurgiTech Inc.
In our previous video, I showed you our EcoSyn-174 synthetic acid and we took a look at how it can dissolve the shell of an egg without damaging the membrane underneath and talked about some of its properties. When I speak with clients about this product I tell them that it’s so safe that you can literally put it in the palm of your hand and dissolve rock in the palm of your hand without causing any sort of chemical burn. I’ve got a little demonstration today to show you that fact.
What we have is a small piece of limestone and we have a scale here. We’ll zero this out and if I zoom in we can see that the piece is 1.39 grams to start with. And what we’re going to do is take some of the EcoSyn acid and I’m going to pour it into the palm of my hand and we are going to dissolve some limestone.
You can see that the product reacts immediately. This product spends a little bit slower than hydrochloric acid, but it does work very well dissolving carbonate rocks. Zoom in here a little bit so you can see some of the reactivity. You can see that it’s actively working on the limestone sample. In a minute here or so we will actually take this out and weigh it and see how much mass loss we had.
The product itself, in addition to being very safe for use, it’s minimally corrosive with steel. I have another video coming where I use some steel samples that have been soaking for a period of weeks in both this product and a 100% hydrochloric acid solution. You can see the dramatic difference in the effect on steel between the two products.
As far as shipping goes, this product does not require any sort of hazmat shipping placarding. It breaks down within 10 days when put into the formation and it’s all around just a great product to use. This is the actual 30% product, 30% concentration. You can dilute this back with water to 15%, 7 1/2%, or whatever your acid job requirement is. We normally ship it in a 30% concentration to save on freight to our clients. It’s very easy to work with when acidizing wells, no fumes at all and actually just feels like soapy water.
This is a man-made product, a manufactured product. It’s a completely new molecule and a really nice product to work with for acidizing wells.
We’ve had this in the palm of my hand a couple of minutes. We’re going to pull this out and just dry it off a little bit. Zero out our scale. And we were at I believe 1.39 before, now we’re at 1.10 grams. In just a couple minutes you can see the bubbles have settled down in my hand a bit here. And if we place the limestone sample in we can immediately see it’s reacting again because it’s not completely spent. The main benefit of this product for our oil and gas clients is the ability to push it much deeper into the pore space before it fully spends. Unlike hydrochloric acid where you’re spending within the first few inches of the wellbore, this allows you to get the product out significantly deeper and allows you to react with virgin rock.
